Joe Louis Walker is a true road veteran. Born on Christmas day 1949 the young Walker grew up listening to his parents collection of 78's which included albums by Amos Milburn, B.B. King, and Howlin' Wolf, among others. This early influence led to his taking up the guitar at age 14. By the age of 16 he had left home ending up in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, rooming with guitarist Mike Bloomfield. Through Bloomfield (the influential guitarist with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band), Walker was exposed to some of the legends of both rock and blues at that time. "He opened my eyes to a lot of stuff, a lot of guitar styles," Walker says of Bloomfield. During this time Walker played with people like Steve Miller, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Lightnin' Hopkins, Earl Hooker, and Magic Sam. "I was opening up for people like Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters," he remembers. Other local bluesmen Walker befriended included Lowell Fulson, one of the architects of the California blues sound and the legendary slide guitarist Fred McDowell, a major influence on Walker's style. The fast life of the late '60s finally got to Walker, however, and by 1975 he was burned out and in desperate need of a change. Heading in a totally new direction, he spent the next 10 years singing with a gospel group, the Spiritual Corinthians, and was able to get his life back on track as well as gain more valuable musical experience. That gospel influence continues to echo in Walker's songwriting and singing to this day. "I like to keep my feet in gospel because it's pure," say Walker. In 1985 at a performance at the New Orleans' Jazz and Heritage Festival with the Spiritual Corinthians, Joe heard the blues muse once again. Upon his return to San Francisco, he formed the group the Bosstalkers and in 1986 released his first album, "Cold Is The Night." Since that time, he has been playing the blues with a dedication that is second to none. Constant touring and widespread acclaim followed with Walker winning several prestigious W.C. Handy Awards for Contemporary Male Artist of the Year (1988 and 1991) and Band of the Year (1996) with his group Joe Louis Walker & the Bosstalkers. He has also released over 10 albums on Hightone and Verve during the past 13 years. Joe Louis Walker always puts on a brilliant display of traditional blues, funk, R&B and rock-tinged blues, all with a soulful quality that draws on Walker's rich blues and gospel background. Through his years of constant touring he has honed his considerable blues guitar skills to a fine point that strikes right at the heart of his listeners and Walker's slide guitar playing is a sight to behold. Joe Louis Walker is simply one of the most versatile, exciting and innovative blues guitarists performing today.

An artist who numbers Tom Waits, Madonna and Michael Stipe of REM amongst his fans makes his debut at The Brook in Southampton on Monday May 16. He's Vic Chesnutt, an American singer-songwriter who has been confined to a wheelchair since being involved in a car accident when he was 18.
Born in Florida in 1964, Vic began playing is brand of contemporary acoustic folk around Athens, Georgia after his accident in the late 1980s but it was not until 1996 that he achieved star status when the "Sweet Relief Two" tribute album featuring his songs was released in 1996. Michael Stipe of REM had helped to produce Vic's first two albums "Little" in 1990 and West of Rome" in 1991, after seeing him play at the 40 Watt Club. The tribute album featured artists such as Madonna, Hootie & The Blowfish, Smashing Pumpkins and REM brought his work to a much wider audience.
A documentary video of Chesnutt's life called "Speed Racer" was produced and directed by Peter Sillen in 1991, and was followed by Vic's third album "Drunk" in 1993. His fourth album was delayed by Chesnutt's membership in Brute, a project with members of Widespread Panic including David A. Schools, Michael Houser, Todd Nance, John Hermann, Johnny Hickman, David Lowery and John Keane. After "Sweet Relief Two" was released in July 1996, Capitol signed Chesnutt and released "About to Choke" his major-label debut, in the autumn of that year. "The Salesman and Bernadette" followed in1998 and featured Lambchop as his backing band. Vic then cut an album with Kelly and Nikki Keneipp called "Roses for the Butt of All Our Merriment" in 2000; in the same year he teamed up with longtime friend and admirer Kristin Hersh for a series of US tour dates. The following year Vic issued "Left to His Own Devices," a collection of rarities, outtakes and demos. In 2003, he struck a deal with the roots rock-oriented New West label, who released "Silver Lake" in 2003. "Ghetto Bells" featuring contributions from legendary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and multi-instrumentalist Van Dyke Parks was released earlier this year.

Amongst tales of space adventure, big bangs and strange characters, they return with Fingathing and The Big Red Nebula Band, an album which undoubtedly features their best work to date. The dynamic duo of far-flung funk and crunching avant hip-hop have become known for thinking up concepts that equal their music in terms of sheer creativity and scope, and this album is no exception. Fear not, concept haters, for the music here stands taller on its own than the gigantic droid you'll meet on 'Reanimo.' The Big Red Nebula Band is a blistering album of powerful breaks, glitchy funk, electronics, cuts and melody. The World's Only Official Live Tribute Band To Marc Bolan & T.Rex CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF MARC BOLAN'S 65TH BIRTHDAY &
T.Rextasy have now been gigging around the world for 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc's very own T.Rex. The band are now accepted as the world's only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan's family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan's catalogue management. Due to their passion, musical ability, longevity, and attention to detail, they are consistently described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute'. They have, with their ‘Marc Bolan' doppelganger lead singer/lead guitarist, Danielz, signed with Columbia Records, Madman Records, and Liberation DVD, won the accolade of ‘Best Live Tribute Band in the UK on BBC1, and performed at the original Billy Elliot premiere party, filmed for ‘Arena' on BBC TV. Over the years they have toured around the world from Europe to Japan and have performed at many Arena venues in the UK (such as Wembley Arena, and Birmingham's NEC). They have played alongside many of the 1970s original contemporaries such as Wizzard, Cockney Rebel, Slade, Sweet, and Ian Hunter, to name a few. In September 2007 they played to 40,000 at the BBC Proms Night at London's Hyde Park, and later headlined their own sell-out concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire with their special guests including Marc Almond (Soft Cell), Gloria Jones (Marc's girlfriend songwriter/singer), and Shakin' Stevens. The band have also accepted invitations from ex-members of T.Rex such as Mickey Finn (original percussionist), Marc's son Rolan Bolan, and Bowie/Bolan producer Tony Visconti, to play alongside them in past special anniversary concerts. Dino Dines (original keyboardist), a long serving member of T.Rex even joined T.Rextasy and remained with them until sadly passing away a few years ago…the list goes on… Expect T.Rextasy to play all of Bolan's biggest hits, such as ‘Ride a White Swan', ‘Jeepster', ‘Telegram Sam', ‘New York City', ‘Debora', ‘Teenage Dream', ‘Hot Love', ‘20th Century Boy', ‘The Groover', ‘I Love To Boogie', ‘Get It On', and of course ‘Telegram Sam', ‘Metal Guru', and ‘Children of the Revolution'. The band plays totally live without the aid of any backing tracks, recreating the music, performance and excitement of those heady and outrageous times of glam rock. Truly a rock'n'roll concert for all ages - if you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this gig is for you! T.Rextasy – awarded the accolade of ‘The Best Live Tribute Band in the UK' by BBC1 TV. ‘They're the closest you're ever going to get to the real thing' ‘T.Rextasy are the tribute act who break all the rules by being bloody brilliant. Danielz is an exact replica of Marc, he's uncanny. ‘Danielz is a curator of Bolan's life, a perfectionist protector of the legacy – T.Rextasy play with a poignant, flamboyant skill.' "Danielz looks and sounds uncannily like Bolan and has dedicated his life to the man" – The Times "Danielz is more than a career lookalike. Here we have a serious guitarist with the animal grace of early Bolan and the clear unequivocal love of the music" "Danielz just freaks me out!" |

The Daily Telegraph. There seems to be two different methods employed by tribute bands in copying their heroes. One is to immerse themselves totally in character, become the band. The other is to still do this, but do it with tongue very much in cheek. So how to interpret the greatest pop group of all time? The Silver Beatles go for option B, not taking themselves too seriously and this approach definitely works for them. They indulge in banter among themselves and with the crowd, making the most out of the fact that every Beatle is instantly recognisable. The first half of the gig is the young Beatles, suits and mop tops, covering all the early hits; 'Saw her standing there, Can't buy me love' among others before finishing on 'Twist and Shout'. Then it's a quick break and costume change where they miraculously transform into the older, hippie era Beatles; the period where they wrote some of their finest songs. Just point non-believers to songs like 'In my life' and 'Let it be' which show, more so than the early years, why the Beatles are still held in such esteem. Not that anyone here needed convincing. The 500 plus crowd, arms held aloft, nah-nah-nah-ing during the encore of 'Hey Jude'. Nope, no non-believers were present. Review by Thomas Christie |

Steve Forbert was born and raised in Meridian, Mississippi, an historic city whose position as a crucial Confederate railroad hub was such that it ultimately drew the unwelcome attention of one General William Tecumseh Sherman (who is said to have proclaimed, as he rode out of sight, "Meridian is no more.").
Sherman's boast notwithstanding, Meridian carried on, and even thrived. In 1897, Jimmie Rodgers (The Father Of Country Music) was born there. In 1954, Steve Forbert emerged, alive on arrival.
Forbert took to music early on, learning to play guitar from a distant cousin of Rodgers' at the age of 10. He apprenticed in the typical array of local bands through high school, after which (like another famous musical Son Of Mississippi) he augmented his income as a truck driver.
But small-town Mississippi life just wasn't cutting it and at age 21 he packed up his songs, his guitar, his harmonica and his ambition and moved to New York City. Taking a room at the "Y" on 23rd Street, he worked various odd jobs by day, and spent evenings busking in Grand Central Station.
Young, confident and generally optimistic, Forbert (and his music) flourished in Greenwich Village's tough-but-romantic bohemian lifestyle where his Southern folkie persona was in marked contrast to the harder edged new wave scene that was thriving at the time. Gigs at the renowned Folk City led to his first paying gig in NYC at Kenny's Castaways while an audition at Hilly Crystal's fabled CBGB's produced opening act slots for artists ranging from Talking Heads to John Cale. |

Support By Lach Antifolk |
www :: |
In the early 80's, after reading a Dylan biography while blaring The Sex Pistols, Lach came to Greenwich Village. He went to Folk City figuring they'd flip over him. They flipped all right: kicking Lach right out onto the street! So did the other folk clubs. It seemed Lach's form of punk/folk was not at all welcome. Fuck 'em, he thought, and moved to the Lower East Side, opening his own illegal after-hours club, "The Fort". The same week Lach opened The Fort, Folk City held the New York Folk Festival, and so, Lach held the first New York Antifolk Festival. Thus, the first wave of Antifolk was born.
The Press went mad!
Lach Today (Fortified Records): " **** (Four Stars) Splendid! Best of it's kind" Mojo Magazine "East Village staple Lach personifies the Antifolk scene with his jangly, funny, pop-punk songs. His current album, Today (Fortified), puts the strong songwriting in a raw rock context." Timeout NY "Lach is a star! More Woody Allen than Woody Guthrie and a raised middle finger to the folk purists." NME "Lach is the mastermind of Antifolk, a loose concept involving acoustic guitars and punk-rock attitude, like a Lower East Side rendezvous of Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. Like black snow, stalled subway cars and random violence, Lach is a Manhattan institution." - NY Times "NYC's living legend, riotously catchy!" - Timeout |

Since 1994 Ricky has been committed to a solo career alongside his career with Deacon Blue and has established himself as a much sought after composer, writing for and with other artists, for film, television and theatre - his first foray into which was "On The Line", Dundee Rep Theatre's production based on the story of Timex in Dundee. "On The Line" went on to win the TMA Martini Award for the Best Overall Production.
The 1996 release of Ricky Ross' debut solo album, "What You Are", perfectly showcased an album that saw a noticeable shift to a more live, personal approach to song-writing that Ricky felt had been inappropriate to indulge in whilst within a band context.
Ricky's first solo shows in May '97 saw him playing two nights alone at Glasgow's Tramway and led to his first short UK solo tour. October of the same year saw the release of "New Recording", an acoustic album recorded simply on guitar and piano, with no guest musicians and only sparse backing tracks provided by loops.
The release of his third solo album "This Is The Life." saw a return to recording with a band. Released to critical acclaim it was followed by a national tour in April 2002. More touring with Deacon Blue followed along with collaborating and writing for other recording artists such as Ronan Keating, James Blunt and J'Nay.
During this period he was also compiling a new set of songs for his next solo album which took shape in the latter part of 2004 recording with his friend and fellow artist Davie Scott. Entitled "Pale Rider" it is scheduled for release in April 2005. Songs from this album along with a host of classics from his repertoire will be aired live in May on Ricky's first solo tour for several years |

Chumbawamba now comes in a super-slim non-caffeine sugarless version called(for the time being) 'Acoustic Chumbawamba', an acapella and acoustic mix-up of five-part harmonies, radical song, stripped-down instruments and stories past and present.
Chumbawamba decided to branch off into acoustic gigs when they re-recorded their album 'English Rebel Songs', realising that their love of harmony and the retelling of the flipside of history could translate into a bloody good evening's entertainment.
'Readymades', Chumbawamba's 2002 album, was influenced by British traditionalmusic, sampling artists like Lal Waterson and Kate Rusby. 'Readymades' mixed breakbeats with these poignant voices and tales of overlooked British history.
Chumbawamba's most recent album, 'Un', mixes beats and voices with samplestaken from global music, telling stories from places such as Argentina, Italy and Cuba.
Acoustic Chumbawamba translates all these stories and songs — along withstrange and eccentric cover versions of songs by the likes of Joe Strummer and the Bee Gees — into a coherent and entertaining collection of international radicalsong.
With the bare minimum of instruments (acoustic guitars, accordion, trumpet) andfive voices, Chumbawamba aims to bury the dominant pretty-face culture with a continuing commentary on the world, a big bucket of bile, and a book of hastily-scrawled jokes.
Acoustic Chumbawamba have played everywhere from arts centres to squats tochurches, and feel at home everywhere. |

The Men They Couldn't Hang
TMTCH appeared at a number of alternative country music festivals and released a fantastic cover version of Eric Bogle's 'Green Fields Of France' (1984), which soon became a big hit on the UK Indie charts. Their first album, 'Night Of A Thousand Candles', was released in 1985. It includes the singles 'Ironmasters' and 'Greenback Dollar'. The following year, they recorded their second album, 'How Green Is The Valley'. Included on this album are the singles 'Gold Rush', 'Shirt Of Blue' and 'Ghosts Of Cable Street'. Their third release in 1988, 'Waiting For Bonaparte' propelled TMTCH to stardom in Europe. The album includes 'Island In The Rain', 'The Crest' and 'The Colours'. At the height of their career, TMTCH recorded the brilliant 'Domino Club' (1990) with 'Great Expectations', 'Kingdom Of The Blind' and 'The Lion & The Unicorn'. Unfortunately, this appeared to be their last studio album and shortly after the following tour, TMTCH disbanded. Much to the delight of their fans, TMTCH reunited in 1996. They returned with a new power and excitement to their music. Their latest release, 'The Cherry Red Jukebox", one of their best albums ever, is the next step forward for the Men in their long and illustrious history. |

The grooves grip tighter than a black hole, the drums smack the cheeks like an asteroid rain-storm, and the bass rumbles and hums like an imploding star.
AC/DC is a band whose appeal is huge, widespread through the generations and totally indifferent to musical fashions. Their unique formula of tight riffs and fat rhythm combines dance ability with hard-rocking anthems that flow through the blood of all who have been smitten by their cheeky-but-colossal offerings. If you want to see AC/DC, but your options are limited, then check out DIRTY DC. You will not be disappointed. All the energy and electricity of an AC/DC show along with completely faithful renditions will leave you trembling, with a smile on your face.
On 16 September 1977 the world lost one of it's most original, flamboyant and charismatic rock'n'roll stars. Marc Bolan's life was cut short after that fateful early morning car accident which would end his life - he was still only 29 years old. Although Bolan released many successful singles and albums throughout the 1970s, two songs epitomise Bolan's status as the ‘King of Glam' – ‘Telegram Sam' (which sold 500,000 copies within the first two days of release), and ‘Metal Guru', both of which were included on the iconic album in 1972 called ‘The Slider'. Later in the year, on 8 September 1972, one of his most memorable and distinctive records that would inspire future generations was also released, entitled ‘Children of the Revolution'. 40 years on, the song has become legendary, along with the name Marc Bolan….
"...Cover bands are big business these days, but this quartet are clearly a cut above most with suits, mop-tops and jerking stage manoeuvres all in place as they blast out 'From Me To You', 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Please, Please Me' with note-perfect aplomb."
MARK BRZEZICKI spent nearly two decades in one of Scotland's finest rock bands BIG COUNTRY. BRUCE FOXTON was a founder member of first generation punk/new wave's legendary JAM. The Jam gave Big Country their first break on the British live circuit. Opening for them at Wembley Arena for five nights back in 1982, which were their final dates. SIMON TOWNSHEND is brother of Pete and for the last 9 years has been a member of THE WHO. Simon and Mark were also in ON THE AIR with TONY BUTLER, their band that preceded Big Country. This is the new Casbah Club.

Songs from this album along with a host of classics from his repertoire will be aired live in May on Ricky's first solo tour for several years
Chumbawamba now comes in a super-slim non-caffeine sugarless version called(for the time being) 'Acoustic Chumbawamba', an acapella and acoustic mix-up of five-part harmonies, radical song, stripped-down instruments and stories past and present.
They recreate the classic hits whilst evoking the atmosphere of those heady times for a new generation to witness and for the older one to re-live.
Not only does the music contain all of the right ingredients but a closer visual representation would be very hard to find.
JEFFERSON STARSHIP, a collaboration of celebrated musicians that plays from the rich songbook of its legendary forefathers JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and the original incarnation of JEFFERSON STARSHIP, prevails as one of the most critically acclaimed touring acts today. Steeped in the fantastic realms of science fiction and the contemporary American shadowland, JEFFERSON STARSHIP features a stellar cast of old and new players, including songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Paul Kantner, vocalist Marty Balin, both of whom founded JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and were crucial in developing the renowned "San Francisco Sound" that changed the course of pop music forever.
TMTCH return to their old stomping ground with their unique folk punk assault. The Men They Couldn't Hang came together in the early eighties when Southampton boys Paul Simmonds, Swill and Jon Odgers from the pop-punk band 'Catch 22', met Stefan Cush in London.

After releasing "Glitter in the Gutter" in March, Jesse Malin embarked on a full UK and European tour in early May, where he also performed BBC 2 Radio Sessions in support of his new single "BrokenRadio". He returned to New York and boarded the bus for the U.S. tour while also completing the filming and editing of the video for "Broken Radio" with Bruce Springsteen. He performed on National Television shows The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson while also playing on early Morning Shows in various cities. He interviewed with newspapers and magazines and radio stations each day, played his 90 minute set (lying down with the crowd for a "Solitaire" sing along), signed autographs at the merchandise booth after the shows and enjoyed the traditional hang with fans in respective cities where he shared stories while dj'ing on the local jukebox bar until the wee hours. He got a new electric Les Paul guitar and painted it with the letters PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and wrote a blog about the meaning of the PMA approach to life. The new record was getting great reviews. Rolling Stone Magazine said "Tracks like these are what iPod playlists are made for."
