Silver BeatlesSouthampton's Finest Beat Combo Our very own fab four return to their very own 'Cavern Club'. |
The Daily Telegraph. There seems to be two different methods employed by tribute bands in copying their heroes. One is to immerse themselves totally in character, become the band. The other is to still do this, but do it with tongue very much in cheek. So how to interpret the greatest pop group of all time? The Silver Beatles go for option B, not taking themselves too seriously and this approach definitely works for them. They indulge in banter among themselves and with the crowd, making the most out of the fact that every Beatle is instantly recognisable. The first half of the gig is the young Beatles, suits and mop tops, covering all the early hits; 'Saw her standing there, Can't buy me love' among others before finishing on 'Twist and Shout'. Then it's a quick break and costume change where they miraculously transform into the older, hippie era Beatles; the period where they wrote some of their finest songs. Just point non-believers to songs like 'In my life' and 'Let it be' which show, more so than the early years, why the Beatles are still held in such esteem. Not that anyone here needed convincing. The 500 plus crowd, arms held aloft, nah-nah-nah-ing during the encore of 'Hey Jude'. Nope, no non-believers were present. Review by Thomas Christie |

Martin Turner's Wishbone AshClass-ic Wishbone Ash With Original MartinAn evening of classic Wishbone Ash Music, just as it sounded in the early days, featuring original bassist and singer Martin Turner |
In a move which is certain to delight Wishbone Ash aficionados and fans of classic rock music in general, 2008/09 sees Martin Turner revisiting Wishbone Ash's classic 1972 album Argus. Generally revered as one of the definitive albums of the rock era, Argus won 'Album of the Year' awards in celebrated UK music papers Sounds and Melody Maker and was one the best selling UK albums of 1972. As the lead vocalist, bassist and principal song-writing force behind Argus, Martin Turner is delighted to be able to bring his creation to life once more and, in addition to the release of Argus: Through The Looking Glass, a stunning fresh interpretation of Wishbone Ash's most critically and commercially successful work, Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash will be making worldwide concert appearances throughout 2008/09, with the centre-piece of the live show being a performance of the complete Argus album - the first time this rock masterpiece has been performed live in its entirety. The Argus tour follows Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash's highly successful and acclaimed period of UK and European touring throughout 2006/07 to promote their two-part live album New Live Dates. During the Argus concerts, Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash will perform a two-part set and, prior to the complete performance of Argus, the band will perform a varied selection of material from other classic Wishbone Ash albums. Martin Turner describes working with his current band line-up of Ray Hatfield (guitar/vocals), Danny Willson (guitar/vocals) and Dave Wagstaffe (drums/vocals) as "an extremely rewarding experience on both a musical and personal level, with a positive vibe not unlike the early days of Wishbone Ash. Collectively we have had a great time revisiting many of the classics from the vintage days of Wishbone Ash, recreating the essence of many songs, some of which have hardly ever been performed live, and reminding us all of the diversity contained in the Wishbone Ash back catalogue. I am confident that we have compiled a show that will please all true Wishbone connoisseurs." Martin Turner's return to the live stage has clearly delighted the Wishbone Ash fanbase: "Martin was in fantastic form! This band surpassed everyone's hopes and expectations. The twin harmonies were spot on." |

Steely ScamSteely Dan TributeThese guys are a must-see for all die-hard fans of Steely Dan – unmissable! |
STEELY SCAM, Southampton's premier Steely Dan tribute, will be back on stage at The Brook, once again featuring The Division Horns, for another evening of outstanding musicianship.
The five piece line up – Bob Phillips (bass & lead vocals), Simon Tilley (drums & vocals), Mike Steele (guitar & vocals), Pete Smith (guitar & vocals) and Ray Drury (keyboards) - had a fantastic year in 2009 playing to audiences across the South and have been gathering a loyal fan base. One fan emailed this message: The whole band is passionate about the music of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and this is reflected in their fabulous recreation of the complex chord structures and stunning vocals which are undeniably Steely Dan. The guys are all at the top of their game as musicians and hugely respected in the South. You can look forward to a brilliant performance of classic Steely Dan tracks including Josie, Bodhisattva, Green Earrings, Reelin' in the Years, Aja - each song capturing the true essence of Steely Dan. The Division Horns line up – Dave Desmond (trombone), Neil Penny (trumpet), Matt McKay (tenor & bari sax & flute) and Andy Libby (soprano and alto sax) – love to work with Steely Scam as often as their own busy performance schedule allows, in venues which comfortably permit ten to a stage. Steely Scam really is as close as it gets to the real thing. |

Colin Blunstone + His All Star BandFrom The ZombiesMember of the acclaimed and hugely influential 'Zombies' and a successful solo artist in his own right. |
Following Article Taken From The Wonderful Wikipedia Blunstone's plaintive, wistful voice was one of the factors making The Zombies' single, "She's Not There" (written by fellow band member Rod Argent), such a big hit worldwide. After the amicable split of the band, shortly after completing the baroque-pop classic LP, Odessey and Oracle, Blunstone briefly worked in the insurance business before resuming his musical career. In 1969, he signed with Deram Records and cut three singles under the pseudonym of Neil MacArthur, including a re-make of The Zombies' hit, "She's Not There" which charted in the UK. He had some success as a solo artist, singing in a much gentler, softer style, notably in 1972 with "Say You Don't Mind" (written by future Wings member Denny Laine) and "I Don't Believe In Miracles" (wtitten by Argent member Russ Ballard), both with distinctive string arrangements by Christopher Gunning One Year (released in 1971 and produced by Chris White) was his first solo album, and includes the song "Caroline Goodbye" about Blunstone's break-up with the model and actress Caroline Munro. This was followed by Ennismore, which is now considered a classic of that period, and Journey, of which the highlight was a track released as a single, "Wonderful", written by Chris White and featuring the keyboard work of Rod Argent. He signed with Elton John's Rocket Records and released three albums, Planes (1976), Never Even Thought (1978) and Late Nights In Soho (1979), which was only released in Europe. Blunstone also contributed his unique, breathy vocals to Dave Stewart's hit cover version of the Tamla classic, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" (1980). He went on to appear on several albums by The Alan Parsons Project including Eye in the Sky and Ammonia Avenue. In 1984, he joined with other Parsons musicians to form Keats. He has appeared quite a few times on the principal radio and TV shows in the UK. He and his band performed several sessions for the John Peel Show and Johnnie Walker Show and on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1971 where he performed live with a string quartet. He has had only a limited acting career. He was in "The Savages" (2001) TV Series and Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1997) both as a singer. Other TV appearances include "The Dan and Dusty Show" (2004) as The Zombies, "Shindig! Presents British Invasion Vol. 2 " (1992) also as The Zombies, and "Pop Quiz" (1982). His sole movie part was in Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) a movie directed by Otto Preminger (as The Zombies) and starring Laurence Olivier. Blunstone still tours to this day, sometimes on his own, occasionally in tours with 1960s bands such as Manfred Mann - and most often with his old Zombies colleague Rod Argent. Some of his recent albums are As Far As I Can See, the mid 1990s Echo Bridge and Out of the Shadows (with Rod Argent). His most recent album, also in conjunction with Rod Argent, was released in 2006. |

Long regarded as one of the South's very best guitarists Mike originally wrote songs for The Rossington Collins Band & Lynyrd Skynyrd before being asked to join Skynyrd. Mike was subsequently inducted into the Hollywood Hall of Fame and played on the band's legendary 1995 "Endangered Species" and "Southern Knights" CD's as well as on the "100 Minutes of Skynyrd" DVD. In Skinny Molly he is joined by brilliant young Florida based slide guitarist Keith Whalen in a twin guitar attack that launches into classic Southern Rock and boogie set featuring the best of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The full line-up includes bass player Gary Nutt (Mike Tramp), drummer Kurt Pietro (Brave New South) and Keith Whalen on second guitar. Expect long hair, Marshall stacks, classic guitar led rock and boogie! Back in 1973 Lynyrd Skynyrd changed the course of rock music by leading a new Classic Rock scene from the south, The debut album "Pronounced Leh nerd-skin-nerd" included the anthem "Freebird", and the band went on to sell 26 million records. Tragically a plane killed several band members and their road crew, and it was only 10 years later that Skynyrd reformed with members of their extended musical family. By the mid 90's the South's leading guitarist Mike Estes joined Skynyrd for their first acoustic release and DVD. It was one of the most exciting later Lynyrd Skynyrd line-ups ever! Now comes Skinny Molly recalling the best of Skynyrd and Mike Estes: including "Gimme Three Steps", "Call Me The Breeze", "Saturday Night Special", "Sweet Home Alabama", "That Smell", "Simple Man", "What's Your Name", "Freebird"!!! + Mike's Straight Shooter "She's Rockin" etc… This is Classic Southern rock 'n' boogie played by the best in the business from the Deep South! |

At one point Batten was in 6 different bands, playing everything from straight ahead rock, to metal, fusion, and funk. A major turning point came when she was selected from over one hundred guitarists to play in Michael Jackson's highly skilled band which toured the world for one and a half years playing for over four and a half million people. Jennifer wasted no time after the" Bad"Tour's grand finale, diving into work on her own album with renown producer (and Stevie Wonder guitarist) Michael Sembello. The stunning results can be heard on "Above, Below, and Beyond", the title appropriately describing the interesting diversity within. With this debut release, the world at large learned what all the excitement was about. Shortly after the record's release in the spring of '92, she was asked again to join Michael Jackson for his upcoming "Dangerous Tour". In January '93, she joined Jackson to partake in Superbowl XXVII's half time entertainment which aired to one and half billion people in 80 nations. It was the largest audience in television history. She completed her second solo record "Jennifer Batten's Tribal Rage~Momentum," just before she was again asked to join Michael Jackson for his 2 year world tour supporting his double album "HIStory" in 1997. Jennifer's Tribal Rage project took a much different direction than her first record and is heavily influenced by world music. It is a hybrid of rock and very exotic sounds, including African percussion, Australian didgeridoo, Caribbean steel drums and Scottish bag pipes. In the spring of 98 Jeff Beck asked Jennifer to join his band. They joined forces for 3 years on the CD's "Who Else", and "You Had It Coming" which were both supported by world tours. Other guest appearances include CD's with Carmine Appice, Michael Sembello, Carl Anderson, Carina Alfie and several rock tributes. Jennifer has authored two music books and ihas just released her third solo CD/DVD entitled "Whatever". With this 3rd effort, she's ventured into electronica, vocal samples, and film. She's supporting this release with a multimedia one woman show, playing guitar in synch with films projected onto a giant screen. The companion DVD includes over 90 min of art films, previously unreleased music videos, interviews, commentary, and an innovative guitar lesson. |

Following the success of 2009's LOL Comedy Club, 2010 sees The Brook playing host to the monthly Thursday night comedy event, which showcases some of the finest comedy talent established in the UK as well as introducing some of the dynamic rising stars of these shores. Ian CognitoIan Cognito is one of the best comics on the national circuit, a veteran who clearly knows what he's doing as he spits his darkly humorous vitriol over an unsuspecting crowd. Outspoken, opinionated, and totally clued up, this man's take on the world will have you convinced and convulsed (with laughter). "Cognito's indignant polemic is a bracing antidote to more amiable routines. When a comedian can transform rage into humour without diluting their passion, the result is always riveting. Share his inspired madness." - William Cook, The Guardian "Cognito puts them all in the shade. If you want to know what's wrong with New Britain, Ian Cognito's going to tell you. And if you don't, you'd better keep your mouth shut. Just stunning." - Phil Daoust, The Guardian "Ian Cognito is up there with the greats. Achtung BabyWorld's Finest U2 TributeAchtung Baby were one of the first tribute bands to be formed in the early 90's along with Abba tribute Bjorn Again and the Bootleg Beatles.
In 1995 Andy (vocalist) appeared on "Stars in their eyes" as Bono singing "With or Without You". Andy won his heat and appeared in the live final and again later that year on the Christmas special. In 1996 the band supported Irish band "Aslan" at the Point Depot in Dublin. To date this is the biggest audience Achtung Baby has ever played to…8000 Irish folk. In 1997 the band appeared in numerous magazines including NME, Now and Heat and is firmly established as one of the worlds leading tribute acts. 1998 was a big year for the band as they embarked on a huge tour of the Middle East. After several sell out shows in Bahrain, the band returned to Europe and played in Belgium, Portugal and finally Holland with a sell-out show at the UZ in Rotterdam. Achtung Baby then returned to the UK and supported "Echo and the Bunnymen" for their comeback show in London to an audience including celebrities such as Eddie Izzard and Denise Van Outen. To round off this amazing year the band supported "The Lightening Seeds" at Wimbledon University and "Shed 7" at Cheltenham University. The band toured Ireland in 1999 with shows in Galway, Cork and the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. In Belfast, Achtung Baby played a sell out show to 2000 fans with "Samantha Mumba" on the bill. To promote this show the band also made an appearance on The John Daly Show on Irish TV where they performed "Pride". Also in 1999, Achtung Baby made their Sky TV debut with an exclusive interview on the 11th Hour Show. They performed two songs, "Desire" and "Angel of Harlem". The band was then approached by an Irish film company to record "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", for a short film called "Buskers". U2 themselves listened to the recording and gave the film company permission to use it. The Film won best short film award at the Aberdeen film festival and has been broadcast on CH4 and Sky Moviemax. In early 2000 the band received the greatest compliment possible. In an exclusive interview to MTV, Bono is asked how he feels about the U2 tribute Achtung Baby; he replied "I'm quite flattered by what they do". Later that year Achtung Baby were chosen from 200 tributes to appear with 5 other acts in the search for the UK's finest on BBC1's "Battle of the Tribute Bands", a one hour TV Special hosted by Terry Wogan and Ulrika Jonsson. The band won the much coveted award for "Best sound-alike tribute band in the UK". In 2001, Andy (vocalist) appeared on the "Pulp" single, "Bad Cover Version" as Bono. The single is a send up of the 1985 band aid song, Do They Know It's Christmas and along with the DVD Video is still available at HMV stores and online on iTunes. Following this hectic period and having established themselves as the very best at what they do, the subsequent years have seen Achtung Baby perform the whole U2 catalogue from "Out of Control" to "Vertigo" on a regular basis throughout the UK and Europe, with frequent performances in the Channel Islands, Germany and Romania as well as appearing in front of thousands of people at Tribfest in North Yorkshire in 2007 and 2008. The band would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone - family, friends, agents, venue owners and mostly you, The Fans, for what has been the most amazing adventure. Long may it continue. |

Jon AllenReturns to The Brook - "In Your Light" - all over Radio 2 at the moment. - Great show last time. This time with a full band! Singer songwriter who can count none other than Guy Chambers as a fan |
I was born in the rural serenity of Winchester and raised by wolves in a meadow among the blue bells. (Well the Winchester bit is true.) I must have been about six when I moved with my family from Winchester to Totnes, South Devon where I spent the rest of my childhood. I was pretty young when I started having piano lessons and singing in a choir. I even started to learn the violin. I had one lesson. It was disastrous. I am left-handed and they made me play right-handed (I could have been a contender!) The secondary school I went to was very different from most. It was an alternative, progressive school called Sands. I started there when the school had just opened. I think there were about 25 pupils. In the beginning we had lessons at one of the children's parents houses and we used to go to another parents house for lunch where they had a drum kit that I would play with chopsticks at lunch times. I started playing the drums in jam sessions at school. No one ever wanted to be the singer it was too embarrassing. Being a natural show off and a clown I grabbed the mike and started crooning an Elvis impersonation. From then on I took to the idea of singing in a band. Another pivotal turning point on my road to rock n' roll was the decision I made to trade my games console for an electric guitar and a fifteen watt guitar amp. For about a year I played a right-handed model upside down. The first song I leant to play was 'I'm the king of the swinger'. It was when I tried to learn the Beatles song 'I've got a feeling' from the 'Let it Be' album and couldn't reach round the neck to play one particular chord that I decided to get a left handed model and learn the other way round. I was sixteen when I wrote my first song. At about the same time I joined a local covers band, as a singer/guitarist. The first music that really captured my imagination was The Beatles. At a friend's house I found a copy of Sgt. Peppers on cassette. After I'd stretched that tape playing it constantly I went in search of the rest of The Beatles back catalogue. From there my interest spun off onto Led Zeppelin, then onto singer songwriters like Dylan, Neil young and Tom Waits. My parents bought me a 4 track recorder for my birthday one year and that really turned my interest on to the way that songs and arrangements were constructed, and the way the different instruments interact with eachother. I started experimenting with recording myself, layering vocal harmonies and generally exploring the multi-track recording process. When I finished college I thought it would be a good idea to get out of Devon. It had become a claustrophobically sleepy place and I wanted to be somewhere where there were other musicians and some kind of scene. I applied for and got a place on a degree course at The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. During my time there I became a stronger and more focused songwriter. In my third year at LIPA one of my demos received a five star review in a magazine called 'Making Music'. From that I got some offers of London Management so the decision to move there after graduation seemed natural. Since I've been living in London I have played several support gigs for Damien Rice, KT Tunstall and Jose Gonzalez among others. Fans of my music within the industry include Coldplay producer Ken Nelson and Guy Chambers. Recently I have supported Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris at Wembley Arena, Manchester MEN and The Zenith in Paris. Also Mark Knapfler has very kindly offered to play guitar on one of my tracks called Sarah. If I were to try to describe my music or my sound I would say 'Green' (joke) Seriously, I guess I have a soulful, slightly gravely voice and I'm into roots, blues and folk music. - Jon Allen |

Groovejuice - Charity Night - Sold OutNo Ticket = No Entry Sorry! One of the UK's finest live party bands, charity party night in support of Breakthrough Breast CancerExpect hit after hit after hit - and all for charity! |

Originally formed by bass guitarist Lloyd Orford in 1997, Groove Juice supported acts including Edwin Starr, Ruby Turner, Courtney Pine, Shalamar, The Real Thing, Imagination, and Heatwave. They have clocked up well over a thousand gigs in the UK alone.
Alex Southgate (Keyboards BV) and Lee Burnett (Guitar) have had the unenviable task of trying to recreate the sounds of the original multilayered disco tracks which often had several guitar and keyboard parts all happening at once, a five piece brass section and a large string section. However, with Groove Juice there is no cheating with sequencers or backing tracks. It's 100% Live and this is evident in the spirit and freedom of their live performance, blistering guitar solos and all. Drummer Sean Kane provides the engine that Groove Juice always needed, a smooth groove so balanced and emotionally responsive that a German car maker could learn a thing or two from his playing. Saxophonist Matt Jones has something of Maceo Parker about his playing with a real rhythmic punchy style that complements the band perfectly. Most noticeable in Groove Juice is their genuine enjoyment of playing together on the stage. Ace frontman Llew the Fly …they say, will release the exhibitionist in your Grandma. In fact to be safe, better keep her at home! This Jamaican born singer has charisma pouring down the steps, flooding the stage before his shoes have even left the dressing room. |

Bernie Plays Rory
The idea to go on the road and deliver a full on Rory set has been in Bernie's head for some time "I love his music and my playing compliments his approach, so in many ways it's a natural fit". But don't expect a straight forward tribute show, as Bernie explains; "This is all about being authentic by playing with members of his last touring outfit, but it's also about what I can bring to the songs. For two hours it's hard work, but it's also good fun.
