Mica ParisSilken Voiced SingerSoul and gospel singer best known for hit 'My One Temptation'. |
One of the UK’s most celebrated female singers Mica Paris exploded onto the international music scene in the late 80’s making a major impact with the debut release of the platinum selling album So Good. My One Temptation was the lead single. This led to collaboration with American soul singer Will Downing on a cover version of the classic Where Is the Love. The follow-up album, Contribution was released in 1991. This extended Paris' soul and gospel influences to bring in hip-hop and house music and featured the track If I Love U 2 Nite written especially for Paris by Prince. Further albums followed including Whisper a Prayer and Black Angel which contained a cover version of U2's One, and a duet with James Ingram. Black Angel produced two more Top 20 singles in Stay and Carefree. Mica has also enjoyed a successful career as a television and radio presenter. Her first love however has always been her music and performing live. Mica's roots are in soul and gospel music. She grew up singing in her grandparents' church and by her mid teens was making regular appearances with 'The Spirit of Watts' gospel choir. She was soon noticed as a distinctive voice and at 17 got her first break as a backing vocalist with the UK chart band 'Hollywood Beyond'. The range, power, and sheer soulfulness of her singing made a major impact on the UK scene and in the following year, 1988, she released her debut, platinum selling album, 'So Good', from which she had her first top ten hit with 'You Are My One Temptation'. This led to a collaboration with American soul singer, Will Downing, on a cover version of 'Where Is The Love', a song made famous by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack in the early '70s. In 1991, Mica's second album,'Contribution', was released. This extended Mica's soul and gospel influences to bring in hip-hop and house music and included a track written especially for Mica by Prince, which she recorded at his Paisley Park studios. Her third album, 'Whisper a Prayer' (1993), marked another departure for Mica, fusing soul, jazz and blues with lush string arrangements. Mica then decided to take a break from recording and turned to the stage, where she starred in two acclaimed West End shows, 'Mama I Want to Sing' and 'Sweet Lorraine'. In 1997 she returned to the studio to record and produce her fourth album, 'Black Angel', and in 2001, another collaboration, this time with Dave Gilmore and Jools Holland on Screamin' Jay Hawkins' classic track, 'I Put A Spell On You', once again topped the charts. In 2002 Mica extended her talents into broadcasting. She presented two shows for television: a documentary tracing the influence of gospel on American popular music, 'The Gospel of Gospel', for Lion Television and Channel 4, which featured interviews with legendary artists Ray Charles, BB King, Al Green, Issac Hayes and Chaka Khan; and Channel 4's 'Gospel Singer of the Year' competition. She also began hosting her own radio show, 'Soul Solutions', on BBC Radio 2. With an average of half a million listeners, it is the most successful soul and R&B show in the UK. Mica also recorded a single with dance music producers M-Gee, 'Bodyswerve', released on independent label Swing City, which has become a gay anthem and a club classic and is now licensed all over the world. In January 2003 she played to a sell-out crowd at London's Jazz Café, and broadcast a two-part show, 'Purple Reign: The Prince Story', on BBC Radio 2 which covered the entirety of the American artist's controversial career and featured interviews with George Clinton, Chaka Khan and Jimmy Jam. She also received a coveted Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for her outstanding contribution to British entertainment. 2004 saw the release of the single, 'Heart', recorded in collaboration with The Seraphim Suite. During the year she also toured with the highly acclaimed stage play, 'The Vagina Monologues', recorded her fifth album, 'If You Could Love Me', broadcast a six-part series on Aretha Franklin for BBC Radio 2, and was listed in the Top 100 Great Black Britons. Now, with her new album of classic soul songs, Mica reconnects with her roots and reinforces her reputation as one of the finest soul vocalists to have emerged this side of the Atlantic. 2005 - Soul Classics 'Soul Classics', created with producer Brian Rawlings, sounds like the record Mica's been waiting half her lifetime to make. With its track-listing culled from listeners' votes on her BBC Radio 2 show, 'Soul Solutions', it finds Mica tackling some of the greatest songs in the soul canon, many of them made famous by male singers, and giving them her own unique spin and perspective. 'Soul Classics' marries traditional soul values and Mica's desire to reinterpret and reinvigorate songs that have a timeless resonance. She doesn't just sing these songs, she inhabits them: and by reconnecting so determinedly with her roots she has reinforced her reputation as one of the finest soul vocalists to have emerged from the British Isles. In 2006, Mica made her TV appearance as one of the presenters of BBC1's fashion makeover show, "What Not To Wear" exceeding the ratings of the previous presenters Trinny and Suzanna. |

Are You Experienced?Hendrix Tribute"...just about the best JIMI HENDRIX tribute show you will see." |
‘ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?' were formed over twelve years ago and in that time they have become widely regarded as just about the best JIMI HENDRIX tribute show you will see. Guitarist John Campbell bears more than just a passing resemblance and has drawn on his many years of playing in different bands and various styles to perfect his ‘Hendrix' persona. When he plays his strat behind his head and with his teeth, it brings a smile to the face of even the most finicky Hendrix fan. With his unique visual playing style, bass guitarist Mark Arnold has also played in various bands over the years and provides a solid foundation as one half of the rhythm section. Drummer and backing vocalist Kevin O'Grady, completes the line up. Anyone who has caught the act will surely agree that Kevin puts nothing less than 100% into his powerhouse drumming style. The band are proud to be playing the timeless music of JIMI HENDRIX, providing some nostalgic moments for those lucky people who actually witnessed Jimi in the flesh and recreating some of the magic for a new and eager audience. Yes, there was and always will be only one, JIMI HENDRIX. Catch ‘ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?' when they come to town and relive the excitement and explosive stage show of the JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE. Let the band take you through all the favourites like ‘Hey Joe', ‘Voodoo Chile', ‘All Along The Watchtower', ‘Foxy Lady' and ‘Little Wing', culminating in the guitar-burning finale of Wild Thing. ‘The Legend Lives On………..' |

DevilDriverDevilDriver has always been a band on a three-pronged mission: Work hard, rock harder, and kick as many asses as possible in the process.Since first forming in 2003, the Santa Barbara metal quintet has stuck resolutely to this mission, even though it's often meant traveling a rougher, less glamorous road than most musicians would prefer to endure. Rather than cashing in on the popularity of his previous successes, frontman Dez Fafarainsisted from the get-go that DevilDriver should not only forge their own unique sound, but should also start at the proverbial bottom of the bill and work their way up through endless touring, earning the music world's respect one fan at a time.
"I get that hard-working attitude from my father," says Dez. "I believe in gnawing at the bit, you know? It's taken its toll on us, sure – but hard work, road work and belief in ourselves is what we're based on."
"For us, it's been a constant growth, musically," Dez explains. "Not only in terms of finding out how to write together, but in figuring out what a good DevilDriver song is. Every single record has been a progression, and we approached everything the same way as we've always done, but it clicked really hard on this record. This is the defining sound of what we are, and where we're going to go in the future." Produced by former Machine Head/Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader (who has previously manned the controls for the Cavalera Conspiracy, Divine Heresy and Five Finger Death Punch), Pray For Villainsfinds DevilDriver rocking as brutally as ever, with the rhythm section of drummer John Boecklin and bassist Jon Miller pummeling the listener into submission while the guitar tag-team of Jeff Kendrick and Mike Spreitzer lets fly with one nasty riff and incendiary solo after another, and Dez truly howls like a man possessed. The album is both more technical and more straightforward than anything DevilDriver has done in the past, but there's also an additional emphasis on groove, dynamics and song-craft. "We decided not to go even more brutal, more heavy, more screamy, more fast than last time, because we've already proved we can do that," says Dez. "There's a lot more groove going on, a lot more dynamics. The guitar work is amazing -some of the solos absolutely blow me away – and the drumming is un-fucking-real. There's gonna be kids in their basements trying to learn this shit forever. Yet we also said, 'Let's not only bring groove into this, but let's bring hooks, and let's write better songs.' We didn't dial it down at all, but we wanted to add some substance to it, as well." Lyrically and thematically, the album's rampaging title track pretty much sums up where Dez is coming from on Pray For Villains. Inspired by his love of Western films, the song is about "how you put all your eggs in one basket, and you bet on the hero – but it's actually the bad-ass villain who comes in and saves the day," he explains. "I love Westerns, especially the ones with Clint Eastwood; I like the anti-heroes, rather than the John Wayne kind of guys. I was thinking that in those films, just like in real life, it usually takes a fucking bad-ass to come in and do the job – and that's usually not the guy in white with the shiny gun. A lot of these songs, including 'Resurrection Blvd.,' 'In The Cards' and 'Forgiveness Is A Six-Gun,' are definitely influenced by that." Themes of self-reliance, hard work and positive energy also run through tracks like "I See Belief," "Pure Sincerity" and "Back With A Vengeance," all of which reflect both the scars and the hard-won accomplishments of DevilDriver's first half-decade. "I'm not a nihilistic dude," Dez explains. "The line,'I see belief when no one else does' – a lot of people are so negative about things, saying, 'Oh, that will never work,' or 'We'll never get that tour,' or 'We'll never get to that place' but I'm just not that guy. Call it stupidity or blind luck," he laughs, "but I've got a feel for what's going to happen with this band. I believe in the motivation and upward mobility of this band, as well as the movement and the bond that we're creating between our fans and us. I want to bring that positivity through the power of metal and say to people, 'Hey, keep your head up/Get your head out of the sand'- take a breath of fresh air, try to be positive about life, and move through it with strength, power and belief in yourself." Of "Pure Sincerity," Dez reveals, "That's for when people ask, 'What's DevilDriver about?' Well, listen to 'Pure Sincerity': 'Give 'em what they want/Give 'em what they need/Pure Sincerity'. That's all it's ever been, from the time we started making music – giving them what we feel is our music, and not trying to follow any kind of trend." "Back With a Vengeance" is a howl of triumph, a musical victory lap for a band that many critics discounted or disregarded, at least until DevilDriver's ever-increasing fanbase and reputation for consistently punishing live shows became simply too much to ignore. "That song's about looking yourself in the mirror and going, 'Yep, that's right, we're kicking ass like I always knew we would be,'" Dez explains. "Don't ever count any motherfucker out in life. It may have taken a record or three to get it through everybody's heads, but now it's obvious. And on 'Back With A Vengeance,' I'm actually giving myself a minute to step back and look at DevilDriver and go, 'Holy shit, we all built this thing together – and it's a monstrous machine!'" To no one's surprise, DevilDriver will be taking that monstrous machine on the road for the rest of 2009, and probably beyond. (The band's innate affinity for touring is reflected on the new tracks "I've Been Sober" and "Another Night In London.") "We need to travel," says Dez. "So we're booked through Christmas '09; we're going all over the world, and we're not coming home. Our schedule is so rigorous, it's unreal – sometimes even I don't know why I put myself through it – but I love the road. I love my family, but I can't sit home for more than two weeks," he laughs. "I think time for me at home is wasted right now. I'm still young enough to go out and do my thing." "You have to love what you do," Dez concludes. "We love to play together as a band, we love to be onstage, and we love to deliver our music to people live. We've always said that's been part of the mission – and if you're gonna talk it, you've gotta walk it. |

Silver BeatlesSouthampton's Finest Beat Combo Our very own fab four return to their very own 'Cavern Club'. |
The Daily Telegraph. There seems to be two different methods employed by tribute bands in copying their heroes. One is to immerse themselves totally in character, become the band. The other is to still do this, but do it with tongue very much in cheek. So how to interpret the greatest pop group of all time? The Silver Beatles go for option B, not taking themselves too seriously and this approach definitely works for them. They indulge in banter among themselves and with the crowd, making the most out of the fact that every Beatle is instantly recognisable. The first half of the gig is the young Beatles, suits and mop tops, covering all the early hits; 'Saw her standing there, Can't buy me love' among others before finishing on 'Twist and Shout'. Then it's a quick break and costume change where they miraculously transform into the older, hippie era Beatles; the period where they wrote some of their finest songs. Just point non-believers to songs like 'In my life' and 'Let it be' which show, more so than the early years, why the Beatles are still held in such esteem. Not that anyone here needed convincing. The 500 plus crowd, arms held aloft, nah-nah-nah-ing during the encore of 'Hey Jude'. Nope, no non-believers were present. Review by Thomas Christie |

The World's Only Official Live Tribute Band To Marc Bolan & T.Rex CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF MARC BOLAN'S 65TH BIRTHDAY &
T.Rextasy have now been gigging around the world for 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc's very own T.Rex. The band are now accepted as the world's only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan's family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan's catalogue management. Due to their passion, musical ability, longevity, and attention to detail, they are consistently described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute'. They have, with their ‘Marc Bolan' doppelganger lead singer/lead guitarist, Danielz, signed with Columbia Records, Madman Records, and Liberation DVD, won the accolade of ‘Best Live Tribute Band in the UK on BBC1, and performed at the original Billy Elliot premiere party, filmed for ‘Arena' on BBC TV. Over the years they have toured around the world from Europe to Japan and have performed at many Arena venues in the UK (such as Wembley Arena, and Birmingham's NEC). They have played alongside many of the 1970s original contemporaries such as Wizzard, Cockney Rebel, Slade, Sweet, and Ian Hunter, to name a few. In September 2007 they played to 40,000 at the BBC Proms Night at London's Hyde Park, and later headlined their own sell-out concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire with their special guests including Marc Almond (Soft Cell), Gloria Jones (Marc's girlfriend songwriter/singer), and Shakin' Stevens. The band have also accepted invitations from ex-members of T.Rex such as Mickey Finn (original percussionist), Marc's son Rolan Bolan, and Bowie/Bolan producer Tony Visconti, to play alongside them in past special anniversary concerts. Dino Dines (original keyboardist), a long serving member of T.Rex even joined T.Rextasy and remained with them until sadly passing away a few years ago…the list goes on… Expect T.Rextasy to play all of Bolan's biggest hits, such as ‘Ride a White Swan', ‘Jeepster', ‘Telegram Sam', ‘New York City', ‘Debora', ‘Teenage Dream', ‘Hot Love', ‘20th Century Boy', ‘The Groover', ‘I Love To Boogie', ‘Get It On', and of course ‘Telegram Sam', ‘Metal Guru', and ‘Children of the Revolution'. The band plays totally live without the aid of any backing tracks, recreating the music, performance and excitement of those heady and outrageous times of glam rock. Truly a rock'n'roll concert for all ages - if you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this gig is for you! T.Rextasy – awarded the accolade of ‘The Best Live Tribute Band in the UK' by BBC1 TV. ‘They're the closest you're ever going to get to the real thing' ‘T.Rextasy are the tribute act who break all the rules by being bloody brilliant. Danielz is an exact replica of Marc, he's uncanny. ‘Danielz is a curator of Bolan's life, a perfectionist protector of the legacy – T.Rextasy play with a poignant, flamboyant skill.' "Danielz looks and sounds uncannily like Bolan and has dedicated his life to the man" – The Times "Danielz is more than a career lookalike. Here we have a serious guitarist with the animal grace of early Bolan and the clear unequivocal love of the music" "Danielz just freaks me out!" |

LEGEND are seven great musicians and singers dedicated to the life and music of the late, great Bob Marley
1969….Man sets foot on the moon and Hawkwind play their first gig…….
Playing to full houses as diverse as the prestigious London Guitar Show Wembley to theatres and rock festivals in the UK, Europe and even Cuba where as soloist Marcos Rodriguez' performance was described as 'a musical bridge between Cuba and Spain' 'When they made Carlos Santana someone forgot to break the mould !' said one astonished fan, who himself was veteran of listening to 5 decades of that distinctive Santana guitar tone.
Pray For Villains, DevilDriver's gut-punching new album, is clearly the culmination of that endless hard work and unconquerable self-belief. Having honed their powerful sound over the course of three previous albums – 2003′s self-titled debut, 2005′s The Fury of Our Maker's Hand and 2007′s The Last Kind Words - and countless live dates (including their legendary Download appearance in 2007, where the band's ferocious performance triggered what many believe to be the largest circle pit in history), the band is now operating at a higher level than ever before.
"...Cover bands are big business these days, but this quartet are clearly a cut above most with suits, mop-tops and jerking stage manoeuvres all in place as they blast out 'From Me To You', 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Please, Please Me' with note-perfect aplomb."
On 16 September 1977 the world lost one of it's most original, flamboyant and charismatic rock'n'roll stars. Marc Bolan's life was cut short after that fateful early morning car accident which would end his life - he was still only 29 years old. Although Bolan released many successful singles and albums throughout the 1970s, two songs epitomise Bolan's status as the ‘King of Glam' – ‘Telegram Sam' (which sold 500,000 copies within the first two days of release), and ‘Metal Guru', both of which were included on the iconic album in 1972 called ‘The Slider'. Later in the year, on 8 September 1972, one of his most memorable and distinctive records that would inspire future generations was also released, entitled ‘Children of the Revolution'. 40 years on, the song has become legendary, along with the name Marc Bolan….
Tiddly Kinks
