Mark James from Soul 45 DJ

PLAYING 7″ VINYL IS FUN

In the last 3 years years THE SOUL 45 DJS (Mark James & Neil Walters) have played host and supported big international artists and local acts including Trojan Sound System, Eddie Piller, Public Service Broadcasting, Craig Charles, Don Letts, Hannah William & The Tastemakers, Freddie & The Freeloaders, Black Cat Boppers, The Fliks, DJ Format, Mr Thing, New Street Adventure and Afrika Bambaataa to name just a few.

As djs we take pride in the fact we don’t play from prepared cdrs, laptops, or ipods, enjoying the warm rich sound that only vinyl records can deliver. We’ve had our fair share of playing mp3s using vinyl emulation software over the years but often felt that we were fooling ourselves and forgetting all the hard work we put into digging for vinyl in record stores, fairs, carboot sales and flea markets. Vinyl records has prevailed through those testing times and proved that its the one format that will never be replaced, with contemporary artists and respectable djs of all genres seeing the importance of vinyl.

Going back to vinyl, playing out these little records and partying with like minded people is great. We’ve never had so much fun.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT DJ TECHNIQUE, BUT ABOUT GREAT TASTE

Everything from classic floor fillers to forgotten and rare gems in Motown, Funk, 60′s and 70′s Soul, R&B, Northern Soul, Reggae, Ska, Dancehall, Disco and the latest releases  – All played out on glorious, original 45 rpm vinyl, providing a richer, more accurate mix of sounds with a superior feel and presence that you won’t hear anywhere else in the mainstream club night circuits in Southampton. Exclusively to SOUL 45 we also create one off pressings that nobody else has on 7″, either LP tracks which were never issued as singles, our own edits or completely unreleased songs that deserve to be played out to a wider audience.

It's a Pizza Thing

There will be hot food outside and we are delighted to have 'It's A Pizza Thing' joining us.

"It's a pizza thing specialise in, you got it, homemade woodfire Pizza!! With the clay oven in the truck. Our own recipe dough hand stretched and cooked to order."

Grab some nosh between 4.00pm & 7.00pm.

Elis Newham
Elis cut his teeth in the grimier edges of London’s nightlife before moving to Bristol to join the Rum Punch Record Club; a nefarious bunch of ne’er-do-wells obsessed with sleazy disco music from around the world. Since then he has swapped his headphones for a lab coat, but continues to dig up gems for your listening pleasure. Expect anything from Cumbia to Highlife and everything in between.

The Sea Slugs

“The Sea Slugs is the new dawn” - Lekan Babalola (Grammy Award winning percussionist)

The Sea Slugs are a fully-charged 7-piece UK Afrobeat band currently based in Southampton. Tackling continued inequality in their lyrical approach, and presenting a freedom within their live performances, The Sea Slugs captivate their audiences, and cultivate an engaging atmosphere.

Over the past four years, they have evolved their unique take on Afrobeat into a contemporary sound that expresses its influences of Afrobeat giants Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, while exploring their roots in a Western jazz and pop musical upbringing.

Since their conception in 2013, The Sea Slugs have performed and worked with many Afrobeat legends and maestros, such as Dele Sosimi, Lekan Babalola, Jon Gingell (The Fontanelles) and Helen McDonald (Yaaba Funk).

Their third full-length album, They Found Asylum in the Sea is released on 30th April 2017, and demonstrates a marked growth and assured individuality in their sound. In this venture, they have allowed themselves to indulge into more contemporary pop structures while staying true to their

Afrobeat ethos. With a new found strength and confidence, the vocals now are cemented in the musical foundations, parallel to the instrumental solos and lead lines The Sea Slugs’ sound was built upon. From beginning to end, They Found Asylum in the Sea moves through international musical voyages, from North African guitar style, Highlife, free jazz, experimental and Afropop.

The lyrical content of They Found Asylum in the Sea discusses issues affecting humanity as a whole, such as women’s rights, the refugee crises, cultural identity and post-colonialism, and governmental and corporate corruption. It also confronts domestic political restlessness, questioning the government on tax avoidance techniques, the injustice of benefit cuts to disabled people, as well as calling the public to mobilise and stand up against discriminatory and apathetic policies, and to demand humane and inclusive leadership from Number 10.

The Sea Slugs have performed hundreds of gigs across the UK, taking in cities across the South West, Wales, the Midlands and the South East, including venues such as Turner Sims (Southampton), The Cheese & Grain (Frome) and The Forge (London). They have also played at festivals such as Common People, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Rhythmtree.
